Work that matters
The Senior Technical Officer provides high-quality and operational support for Adelaide Microscopy. The role delivers expert services in plant sample preparation, histology and imaging using advanced light and electron microscopy techniques, supporting high-quality research across a broad range of plant science disciplines. Working closely with researchers, students and external collaborators, the position provides specialist expertise, advice and training to maximise the use of advanced microscopy capabilities and contribute to world-class research outcomes.
The role is responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of microscopy laboratories and associated equipment, ensuring resources are safe, compliant, well maintained and available to support research activities. Key responsibilities include coordinating equipment maintenance, calibration and servicing; health, safety and regulatory compliance; maintaining asset and operational records; and contributing to the continuous improvement of standard operating procedures. The role also partners with academic, professional and external stakeholders to facilitate access to microscopy services, deliver user training and inductions, coordinate facility scheduling, contribute to compliance audits, and support workshops and training activities that promote the safe, effective and efficient use of the University's imaging capabilities. Working under the direction of senior Adelaide Microscopy staff, the role will also develop and apply innovative microscopy techniques to support evolving research needs and enhance service capability.

The team
Adelaide Microscopy is a core facility offering a broad range of technologically advanced instrumentation for microscopy and microanalysis to universities, research institutions and industry. Our staff, among the best in their field, possess extensive expertise in microscopy and microanalysis, encompassing biological, mineral and materials sciences. They understand the need for accurate analysis, providing expert advice on suitable techniques and applications to solve the most demanding or complex research problems.
You will be part of the Adelaide Microscopy team, located at the Waite campus, which specialises in plant microscopy while also supporting a broad range of microscopy-related research activities. A key focus of the role is providing microscopy support to Mortlock Research Fellows and their research programs.

Experience
To join our community and thrive in this role, you will likely have the following skills and experience:
- A degree in Plant Biology with subsequent relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or training.
- Demonstrated experience in plant sample preparation and imaging, with knowledge of light and electron microscopy techniques.
- Providing training and support to facility users.
- Proven ability to coordinate resource allocation and scheduling for research projects.
- Managing research infrastructure, facilities or technical services and maintaining and operating research equipment and asset management systems.
- Implementing health, safety and regulatory compliance in a research setting.
