    The Institute for Future Farming Systems, within the School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, leads applied research focused on improving the sustainability, productivity, and profitability of northern Australia’s beef industry. The Precision Livestock Management team delivers industry partnered projects centred on calving outcomes, maternal investment, and reducing calf loss, using emerging technologies and on-farm data collection to generate practical, adoptable solutions.

     

    As a key member of the research team, you will support the delivery of field-based activities across commercial beef properties and research sites throughout Queensland and the Northern Territory. This includes deploying and maintaining on-animal sensors and camera systems, supporting cattle handling and calving activities, collecting and managing data, and engaging directly with producers and industry partners to ensure research outputs are relevant and applicable. You will also contribute to project logistics, reporting, and stakeholder engagement across the life of the project.

     

    We are seeking a proactive and adaptable professional with hands-on experience in beef cattle production and a strong interest in applied research and extension. You will be confident working independently and as part of a team in regional and remote settings, with strong communication and organisational skills. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful industry impact while working closely with researchers, producers, and technology partners in a collaborative and purpose driven environment.

    Position Requirements

     

    • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, or equivalent combination of qualifications and applied research experience.
    • Demonstrated experience working with beef cattle in commercial production environments, including safe livestock handling practices.
    • Ability to support field-based research activities, including data collection, animal monitoring, and operation of on-farm technologies.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with producers, researchers, and industry stakeholders.
    • Proven organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, work independently in remote settings, and contribute to project delivery.
