    • Full-time and fixed term to August 2027
    • Located at the Cairns Nguma-bada campus in Tropical North Queensland
    • HEWL 5 - $78,740 - $89,310 p.a. + super and other benefits

    About TropWATER

    The Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research (TropWATER) is Australia’s premiere tropical aquatic research group and is an amalgamation of aquatic expertise from across James Cook University (JCU). The Centre comprises of over 150 staff and 100 post-graduate students and performs research in fields related to water science, resource management and the ecology of water ecosystems.

    What you can accomplish in the role

    The Research Worker will contribute to a growing marine and coastal research program within JCU’s TropWATER, supporting collaborative projects focused on marine habitat mapping, monitoring and ecological assessment across northern Australia. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the role will assist in the delivery of research relating to seagrass, coastal ecosystems and benthic habitats using a range of field, spatial and analytical approaches. The position will support projects undertaken in partnership with Traditional Owners and Indigenous ranger groups, with a strong emphasis on co-designed research, respectful engagement, and the acknowledgement of Indigenous knowledge alongside western scientific approaches. The successful applicant will contribute to field surveys, data collection and analysis, reporting, and the ongoing development of long-term monitoring programs that support Sea Country management and conservation outcomes.

    What you can bring to the role

    • Demonstrated experience in marine research, including small boat operations at sea, organising field trips or similar logistical operations, and the maintenance and safe operation of field equipment.
    • Experience preparing reports or scientific publications, including proficiency in writing.
    • Proficiency in the Microsoft Suite, ARC Pro/QGIS and R.
    • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise and meet competing deadlines with sound judgement.
    • Well-developed verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships and navigate complex matters.
    • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with Traditional Owners in a culturally respectful and inclusive manner, including observing cultural protocols, supporting free, prior and informed consent processes, and recognising Traditional Owners as the original custodians and knowledge holders of Country. (Desired)
    • Experience in the identification of coral, seagrass and fish species and applying relevant sampling techniques. (Desired)
    • Experience with underwater sampling equipment or drone operation for research purposes. (Desired)
    • Coxswain Grade 1 or 3. (Desired)
