Macquarie University Health (MQH) is embarking on one of its most significant digital transformations to date. We are seeking a Data Architect within our MQ Health domain to help anchor our Health/EMR Program and shape the data architecture that will underpin a modern, connected digital health ecosystem.

This is a rare opportunity to influence the data foundations of a leading Academic Healthcare Institution. Working within Agile ways of working, you will help turn clinical data into a high-value, reusable asset that improves our decision-making, accelerates research, and enables long-term digital health outcomes aligned with our 2025 to 2029 Digital Health Vision.

If you are someone who enjoys translating complex requirements into clear, future-ready architecture and want your expertise to make a measurable difference to patients, clinicians and researchers, we would love to hear from you.

    About the Role

Reporting to the Director, IT Architecture, you will shape and govern the target-state data architecture for the health domain, ensuring information assets, platforms, standards and integration patterns align with business priorities and future-state care models. Key responsibilities include:

    • Defining and maintaining the target-state data architecture for the health domain, including conceptual, logical and physical data models, using an evidence-based approach.

    • Translating business, clinical, reporting, research and regulatory requirements into clear data architecture direction, roadmaps and transition states.

    • Supporting major transformation initiatives, including the new EMR and enterprise Health Data Platform (HDP), by defining the data architecture needed for implementation.

    • Guiding data transition planning, including legacy coexistence, migration sequencing, master data design and record linkage.

    • Defining data and integration patterns (API, FHIR, HL7) that enable interoperable exchange across clinical, operational, research and external systems.

    • Partnering with data governance, product teams and business stakeholders to embed controls for data quality, stewardship, lifecycle management and policy compliance.

    • Ensuring data architecture incorporates appropriate privacy, security, access control and resilience requirements for sensitive health information, in line with the NSW HRIP Act and the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988.

You can align architecture decisions to business outcomes, digital health priorities and enterprise transformation objectives.

    • Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline, or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience, with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.

    • Extensive experience in data architecture, information architecture or senior data design roles within large and complex organisations, including assessing current-state landscapes, defining target-state architectures and developing practical transition pathways.

    • Proven experience in health data architecture, including familiarity with core clinical systems (such as EMR) and health data platforms.

    • Sound knowledge of data architecture disciplines, including conceptual, logical and physical modelling, information lifecycle design, metadata, lineage, master data, reference data and data quality.

    • Capable problem-solving and analytical skills, including the ability to identify patterns, dependencies, risks and opportunities, and working knowledge of modern data platforms, integration ecosystems and analytics environments.

    • Effective stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to build alignment and clearly articulate complex architectural concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in environments involving sensitive data, regulatory obligations and competing priorities, including experience with architecture governance and assurance.

    • An understanding of higher education health environments, and knowledge of health data interoperability standards including HL7 FHIR, HL7 v2, SNOMED CT and ICD-10. (Desirable)
