Help tell the stories behind research that's changing lives.

At James Cook University, our researchers are tackling some of the world's biggest challenges—from protecting tropical ecosystems and the Great Barrier Reef to improving health outcomes and supporting communities across Northern Australia and the Tropics.

We're looking for an experienced communications professional to join our Research Strategy and Performance team on a 6-month parental leave contract. This is an exciting opportunity to work with leading researchers, create compelling stories and showcase research that delivers real-world impact.

Whether you're an experienced communications advisor looking for your next challenge or someone keen to build on your research or science communications experience, you'll find meaningful work, supportive colleagues and the opportunity to make a genuine difference.

This position can be based at our Cairns or Townsville campus.

You'll work directly with researchers and stakeholders across the University to tell the stories behind JCU's world-leading research. From creating engaging digital content and coordinating high-profile events to helping researchers communicate their impact, no two days are the same.

    You'll have the opportunity to:

    • Develop compelling stories that showcase research making a difference locally and globally.
    • Create engaging content across web, social media and digital channels.
    • Coordinate research events and engagement activities that strengthen JCU's research profile.
    • Partner with researchers to communicate complex ideas in clear and engaging ways.
    • Develop practical resources that help researchers demonstrate and communicate research impact.

You're a creative communicator who enjoys translating complex information into engaging stories. You thrive on building relationships, managing multiple projects and finding innovative ways to connect with different audiences.

    You'll bring:

    • Experience in communications, marketing, public relations, research communications or a related field.
    • Excellent writing, editing and storytelling skills.
    • Experience producing digital content across websites, social media and multimedia platforms.
    • Strong digital literacy, including experience managing web content and using Microsoft Office.
    • Experience using large language models and AI tools to support content creation and communication activities.
    • Strong organisational skills, with experience coordinating projects, campaigns or events.
    • A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Experience in research communications or an understanding of research impact in the higher education sector will be highly regarded but isn't essential.

    Why James Cook University?

At JCU, you'll join Australia's leading university dedicated to the Tropics. Our research addresses issues that matter—to our region, our nation and the world.

    In return, you'll enjoy:

    • A unique opportunity to work alongside world-leading researchers.
    • A collaborative and supportive team environment.
    • Flexible work arrangements where operationally appropriate.
    • Generous superannuation and leave entitlements.
    • Professional development opportunities.
    • The chance to contribute to research that creates lasting impact.
