About This Opportunity
We are seeking a motivated and energetic Veterinary Clinician to lead the Small Animal Primary Care and Urgent Care teams at The University of Queensland Gatton Veterinary Teaching Hospital. In this role, you will provide high-quality, relationship-centred care for dogs, cats, avians, and exotic species within UQ Vets Small Animal Hospital, while fostering a cohesive, high-performing clinical team committed to excellence in patient care and service delivery.
Aligned with the University’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement, you will also play an integral role in clinical education and supervision of veterinary science and veterinary technology students. Reporting to the Practice Manager, you will contribute to the training and mentoring of interns and junior clinicians, combining clinical leadership with a strong commitment to collaboration, professional development, and continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
Oversee daily operations and workflow of the service, ensuring effective coordination of rostering, leave, performance development, recruitment, onboarding, and staff training, while fostering a positive, high-performing and supportive team culture.
Provide clinical and professional leadership by mentoring veterinarians and staff, role-modelling best practice, supporting case management and service delivery, and contributing to hospital-wide governance, committees, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Deliver high-quality, relationship-centred clinical care through independent management of routine and complex cases, while advancing expertise in veterinary practice (including shelter medicine) and strengthening external partnerships such as RSPCA and associated organisations.
Actively contribute to clinical teaching and learning for undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts, support course delivery and caseload management, and engage in service development, stakeholder relationships, and continuing professional development activities.
About You
A Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent, registrable in Queensland
Award of membership of ANZCVS or equivalent plus experience of more than 4 years in the area of general practice or emergency & critical care is desirable
Demonstrated relationship-centred approach to veterinary care, with a commitment to developing genuine partnerships with the entire healthcare team, including the client
Demonstrated accountability and a proactive attitude with the enthusiasm and drive to identify and contribute to improvements within the Small Animal Hospital
Commitment and enthusiasm for the education of Veterinary Science and Veterinary Technology students
Capacity to serve as an excellent clinical veterinary role model
An understanding and knowledge of relevant legislative and professional requirements relating to veterinary practice in QLD and to veterinary health and safety requirements
Ability to establish effective professional relationships and to represent the School of Veterinary Science to the university and wider community, including industry, government and professional bodies
Demonstrated effective interpersonal, teamwork, negotiation and consultation skills and formal written and oral communication skills
