    The Opportunity

    The School of Computer Science and Engineering has an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Biomedical Image Computing Group and contribute to cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence (AI) for retinal image analysis. As part of a world-leading research team, you will develop and evaluate state-of-the-art AI methods, including machine learning, deep learning, and foundation models, in close collaboration with ophthalmologists, clinicians, and biomedical researchers. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful research at the intersection of AI and healthcare, helping to advance the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases through innovative image analysis techniques.

    This position offers the opportunity to advance your scholarly research and professional activities on both national and international levels. You will contribute to the writing of scientific papers and reports for leading journals and conferences, participate in conferences and workshops, assist with the supervision of HDR students, and collaborate with clinicians, biomedical researchers, and multidisciplinary research teams.

    This role reports to Professor Erik Meijering and has no direct reports.

    • Salary, Level A Step 6 - AUD $113,911 per annum + 17% superannuation

    Skills and Experience

    • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
    • Demonstrated track record in research, evidenced by publications in top-tier AI and biomedical journals and conferences, with outcomes of high quality and impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
    • Strong experience in machine learning and deep learning for retinal image analysis.
    • Experience in developing comprehensive benchmarks.
    • Solid coding and software engineering skills.
    • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
    • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
    • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
    • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
    • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
