PRIMARY DETAIL

• Appointment type: Continuing, Part time (0.6 FTE / 21 hour per week)
• Salary Package: Competitive salary plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading
• Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus (North Ryde)

THE ROLE

Applications are warmly invited for the position of Occupational Therapist at the Macquarie University Special Education Centre (MUSEC). Reporting to the Principal of MUSEC School, the successful candidate will work closely with Speech Pathology staff and Special Educators to support students to engage in classroom program, increasing their functional independence. The occupational therapist will identify students’ individual needs, recommend and implement programs in collaboration with teaching staff through individual or group settings.

The Occupational Therapist will work as part of a transdisciplinary team, liaise with caregivers, staff and external health professionals involved with each child as necessary.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide small group occupational therapy programs within the classroom

  • Knowledge and capability to provide a wide range of occupational therapy programs and interventions to assist children with a disability to participate in school curriculum

  • Monitor and collect data on student progress

  • High levels of interpersonal skills to liaise with parents, students, teachers, other professionals and external occupational therapists to support the implementation of occupational therapy strategies relevant to the school environment

  • Evaluate interventions or programs, provide evidence of outcomes and advise and support staff and parents on evidence-based occupational therapy strategies

  • Supervise and support students in the classroom, playground and on excursions to help them develop independence and social skills

  • Comply with relevant EEO and WHS regulations

  • Perform any other duties as required and as appropriate for this classification level

ABOUT YOU

You will have experience working as a part of a team to support students K-6 with a range of special learning needs. You enjoy working collaboratively with teachers and have experience working in a classroom setting. You will have demonstrated experience in using data to assess students learning needs and to monitor student performance. You will also have experience utilising occupational therapy services with children on an individual and group basis and have a demonstrated ability to assess each student’s learning needs and formulate a curriculum based and individual therapy goals.

  • A recognised qualification in occupational therapy, acceptable for membership of the Australian Health Professionals Association

  • Experience in the use of assessment and intervention to develop capabilities to increase independence in everyday tasks

  • Knowledge and experience in supporting staff and children in implementing occupational therapy techniques and programs within the classroom

  • Knowledge and experience in evidence-based practice for children with special education needs

  • Experience supporting children with autism is an advantage

Note: The position of Occupational Therapist requires the successful candidate to comply with occupational screening assessment and vaccinations in line with Macquarie Universities health requirements. The position also requires a current and valid Working with Children Check Clearance for NSW. Macquarie University must be satisfied that all background checks, including a criminal record and qualification check are completed.
