THE University of Adelaide has released a discussion paper to stakeholders which includes five options for the future of Radio Adelaide.
They range from maintaining current funding and operation at a cost of more than $4 million over five years to closing the station in June, 2016.
The station's current premises in Adelaide have been sold, prompting the university to consider its future location, shape and funding, vice-chancellor Warren Bebbington said.
Two community broadcast consultants have provided the university with the five options which also include scaling back its operations to save money and transferring the licence to a new owner.
Professor Bebbington said the station was significantly subsidised and like all universities in Australia, the University of Adelaide was under financial pressure.
"All parts of the university are required to make savings, and we cannot exempt Radio Adelaide (5UV) from the financial constraints on our core teaching and research," he said.
"We certainly recognise the value of Radio Adelaide as a community broadcaster.
"But now is the time to think through a viable future model for the station."
Responses to the discussion paper are due by December 11 with the university expecting to announce its decision the following week.
