About the Role
This is a postdoc position associated to the ARC funded Discovery Project "The Physical Mathematics of String Dualites" led by Johanna Knapp (University of Melbourne) and Jock McOrist (University of New England) with Partner Investigators Philip Candelas (Oxford), Xenia de la Ossa (Oxford) and Eirik Eik Svanes (University of Stavanger). The goal of the project is to study the mathematical structure of string dualities with a focus on connections between heterotic and type II string compactifications.

You have expertise in one or more of the following areas: heterotic and/or type II string theory, supersymmetric gauge/field theories (in particular, gauged linear sigma models), Calabi-Yau spaces in algebraic/differential geometry and string theory, moduli spaces and topological string theory, mirror symmetry, holomorphic vector bundles, D-brane categories, or related topics.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Significantly contributing to team research efforts and developing research expertise with increasing autonomy, under the guidance and support of senior academic staff.
  • Contributing to and publishing high-quality scholarly outputs, actively participating in seminars and conferences to share research findings, and preparing research proposals for internal or external funding opportunities.
  • Training, mentoring, and supervising students, as well as effectively supervising junior research staff within your area of expertise.
  • Actively participating in School meetings, planning activities, or committee work to support capacity building, while contributing to Diversity and Inclusion initiatives within the School and Faculty.

Who We Are Looking For

  • A PhD (completed or near completion) in mathematical physics, theoretical physics, pure mathematics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing research reports and manuscripts for publication, with a strong track record of publications in relevant fields.
  • Proven ability to design and carry out research projects effectively.
  • Expertise in designing and managing research methodologies.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
