About This Opportunity 

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Officer will collaborate with Professor Xiwang Zhang, Dow Chair Professor and Director of the UQ Dow Centre for Sustainable Engineering Innovation, on the development of high-performance porous membranes for diverse applications, including: 1) protein separation and purification, 2) redox flow batteries, and 3) lithium recovery.

This position includes designing and executing experimental procedures for membrane development, covering fabrication, characterisation, and performance evaluation. Responsibilities also involve advancing membrane processes and equipment, conducting lab and field experiments, managing datasets, coordinating with collaborators, and contributing to data analysis and scientific writing.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Research: Design and develop high-performance membranes with precise ion or molecular selectivity, while optimising innovative separation processes for real-world applications. Lead advancements in membrane technology, producing high-quality research for prestigious publications, and support research funding initiatives. Facilitate knowledge transfer and commercialisation by translating research findings to end users, promoting UQ intellectual property.

  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise Honours and Higher Degree by Research students, supporting their development and ensuring effective guidance. Manage research support staff according to University policies throughout their employment, addressing conflicts and grievances promptly and professionally.

  • Citizenship and Service: Exhibit citizenship behaviours that reflect UQ values, demonstrating leadership through collaboration and active engagement in key initiatives. Support academic roles and unit operations during team absences, contribute to internal service roles, decision-making, and committees. Engage in external service activities and initiate partnerships with industry, government, professional organisations, and the broader community.

  • Teaching: Where undergraduate teaching is undertaken achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.

About You

  • PhD (completed or near completion) in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field.

  • Strong publication record in top scientific journals.

  • Expertise in membrane design, fabrication, module development, and testing.

  • Extensive experience in membrane applications for ion and molecular separation, focusing on protein separation, lithium recovery, and redox flow batteries.

  • Strong organisational and planning skills, with proven ability to handle multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and deliver results.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise reports, publications, and grant proposals.

  • Understanding of confidentiality, privacy, and data management principles and proven ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Industry experience in membrane manufacturing is highly desirable.
