About This Opportunity 

An excellent opportunity is available for an Occupational Health Consultant based within the Heath, Safety and Wellness (HSW) Division. In this role, you will guide and support the University’s occupational health monitoring and vaccination and immunization programs to enhance user safety, and compliance with the relevant legislation and Codes of Practice. The Occupational Health Consultant (OHC) will provide support, advice and training to end users for the prevention of illness arising from exposure to health hazards in the workplace.

Working in partnership with another OHC, key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Development and review of occupational health related policies, procedures and guidelines, with a particular emphasis on vaccination and immunisation issues.

  • Review and determine requirements for health monitoring.

  • Facilitate the University’s response to complex health issues; e.g., COVID-19, measles outbreak, TB notifications or pandemic influenza.

  • Co-ordinate and manage University wide programs– e.g., Hearing Conservation Program, First Aid Officer Program, Health Surveillance and UQ Staff vaccination programs.

  • Plan, develop, implement and evaluate programs designed to prevent illness and injury and promote health, safety and wellness in the workplace.

  • Participate in occupational health and safety advisory activities within the HSW Division including training, the provision of OHS advice, the conduct of OHS audits etc.

  • Recommend appropriate control measures designed to eliminate or minimise risk factors.

  • Participate in incident investigation, action, modifications and changes in work practices where indicated.

This is a part-time (40%), continuing position.  

At HEW level 8, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $108,975 - $122,176, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $127,500 - $142,946 annually.  As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.

About You  

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current AHPRA registration.

  • Nurse Immuniser qualification and related experience .

  • Previous experience in managing health monitoring programs, including performing/interpreting lung function and hearing assessments.

  • Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing and evaluating organisation-wide projects to achieve intended project outcomes.

  • Demonstrated experience of strong engagement skills and building partnerships across organisational units and external organisations to achieve desired project and University outcomes.

  • An ability to develop and present effective training and awareness programs in areas related to occupational health.

  • A sound knowledge of the principles and legislation related to work health and safety, particularly relating to occupational health issues.

  • Knowledge and skill regarding the identification, assessment, control and measurement of health hazards in the workplace.

  • Demonstrated ability to gather, analyse and interpret data to produce succinct, definitive and well-written, compelling reports.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in occupational health or occupational health and safety or related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

  • At least 5 years post-graduate experience in nursing and previous experience in a safety role.

  • Knowledge of, and/or experience in, the practice of occupational hygiene.

In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply:
