The School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate, for 1.5 years 0.4 FTE, fixed term.

The project will build on electromagnetic models developed by the research team at The University of Adelaide to simulate novel electromagnetic devices and machines. The use of semi-analytical models has become increasingly popular due to the improved accuracy and reduced processing time compared to industry-standard methods. The work envisaged in this project will couple the state-of-the-art electromagnetic models with similar analytic methods for multi-physics simulation, including effects such as temperature and vibration. These models will be used to design and analyse a range of electromagnetic devices such as linear actuators for space applications and electric motors for vehicles.

The successful applicant will play a leading role in developing and implementing new electromagnetic models within an erudite team led by the Director of Engineering Programs, Dr Will Robertson, in the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The successful applicant will undertake both experimental work and numerical studies, and engage with the day-to-day activities of the school.

The successful applicant will need:

  • A PhD or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience in building electromagnetic devices and undertaking experiments in a laboratory setting using sophisticated data acquisition and real-time control systems.
  • Advanced analytical and computational skills; a demonstrated ability to derive analytical equations for electromagnetics problems (or equivalent); and, a demonstrated ability to perform numerical and symbolic calculations using analytical and semi-analytic models.
  • Experience with a range of software packages, or their equivalents: ANSYS Maxwell, Mathematica, Matlab, Labview, and LaTeX.
  • A demonstrated publication track record in respected international scientific journals.
  • The ability to work well with partners both in academia and industry, to plan and manage their own research activity and to conduct relevant individual and collaborative research projects.
