The UNSW Institute for Climate Risk and Response (ICRR) is seeking a Research Associate to join its interdisciplinary team. ICRR places priority on establishing effective climate risk management frameworks to address the social, environmental, governance and economic impacts of climate change. The Research Associate will work in partnership with the Australian Climate Accountability Project team at the Australian Human Rights Institute and will also will also contribute to other interdisciplinary projects.

About the role

  • $106K - $113K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 2 years
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Research Associate reports to the Director of the ICRR, Professor Ben Newell, and has no direct reports.

About the successful applicant (Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD or demonstrated research background in regulatory frameworks relating to climate risk and response, including: law, human rights, ESG, corporate disclosure, macroeconomics, business and human rights, public policy, regulatory frameworks, regulatory policy, corporate accountability or other fields in which a demonstrable connection to the research focus of the ICRR can be made.
  • An understanding of climate and human rights related regulatory frameworks, including disclosure obligations would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research, legal and policy analysis and interdisciplinary research with limited supervision.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

You should systematically address these selection criteria in your application.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Contribute independently or as a team member to interdisciplinary collaborative research, including:
    • conducting literature reviews and desk-research on relevant regulatory regimes;
    • creating and editing the findings of qualitative analysis at a level publishable in high rated English-language academic law journals; and
    • working with colleagues from other academic disciplines to assimilate their insights into cross-disciplinary outputs in areas such as psychology, economics, management, and sociology. .
  • Assist senior management of the ICCR and the Australian Human Rights Institute to sustain effective ongoing communication and, where relevant, coordination between the two Institutes.
  • Support the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets, such as white papers, academic articles, conferences, workshops and project briefings.
  • Contribute to the development of funding proposals and other research activities and undertake specific research project/s under the guidance of a research leader.
  • Assist with the supervision of research students (Hons and PhD) where required.
  • Contribute to community engagement and public outreach on topics relevant to the ICRR’s priority research areas.
  • Willingness to engage with industry, business and government on research projects related to ICRR’s priority research areas.
