The Opportunity

The School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at UNSW is looking for a motivated Laboratory Manager to ensures the School’s laboratory facilities operate smoothly by providing safe and effective procurement, and managing operations and maintenance of all infrastructure, equipment and facilities. You will be responsible for leading and supervising a team of 16 staff within these laboratories while carrying out the general management of the laboratories and meeting the accountability requirements in terms of Work Health and Safety and laboratory practice standards. In this role you will be focused on achieving high-level outcomes in both technical and administrative areas of the school’s laboratories, staff management and infrastructure.

This role reports to the Deputy Head of School (Laboratories and Infrastructure) and has 8 direct reports.

  • Salary Level 8/9: $118,883 to $146,613 per annum + 17% superannuation

Skills and Experience

Level 8

  • Tertiary or trade qualification in a Mechanical Engineering discipline, combined with extensive experience in managing a complex laboratory operation (or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any combination of education, training and/or experience).
  • Proven success and extensive experience in leading and developing technical staff with a demonstrated ability to develop a strong and respected service culture.
  • Highly developed problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to develop and implement new initiatives.
  • Outstanding communication, leadership, and organizational skills, with a focus on understanding and communicating concepts and policies to staff, postgraduate students, undergraduate students, and visitors.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and managing Work Health & Safety and risk management systems and processes in a laboratory environment.
  • Extensive experience in managing infrastructure and material resources, including the management of equipment, chemicals, specimens.
  • Proven experience in effective policy, planning, operation and maintenance of teaching and research laboratories.
  • Demonstrated success in the dedication to continuous improvement through long term planning and expansion of laboratory policy and facilities
  • Expertise in managing high level technical projects and negotiating service agreements.

Level 9 (in addition to the above)

  • Extensive leadership experience in a laboratory setting, preferably laboratories involving mechanical, manufacturing, and testing systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in management of high level technical projects.
  • Demonstrated ability in long term strategic planning and expansion of laboratories facilities at senior level.
  • Demonstrated strong change management skills.
