The University of Western Australia (UWA) is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world and a member of the prestigious Australian Group of Eight research intensive universities. With a strong research track record, vibrant campus and working environments, supported by the freedom to innovate and inspire, there is no better time to join Western Australia’s top university.

About the team

Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) is a national collaborative research infrastructure, supported by the Australian government to undertake systematic observing of Australia’s marine environment. These observations produce data streams that are publicly available via the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) and support a range of research and operational activities across academic, government, and industry. The National Coastal Wave Buoy Facility is a new IMOS facility focused on greatly expanding sustained nearshore wave and temperature observations around Australia.

The IMOS National Coastal Wave Buoy Facility is hosted at the University of Western Australia’s Oceans Graduate School. The University of Western Australia Oceans Graduate School carries out fundamental research at an internationally recognised standard of excellence in the areas of the coastal dynamics and nearshore oceanography. It houses significant national ocean-related research infrastructure (including other IMOS Facilities) within its Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre complex at Crawley and within the Coastal and Offshore Research Laboratory at Shenton Park. Its scientific and technical expertise service a range of marine industries at both a national and international level. Our field-based research programs focus on the collection of a range of coastal datasets (e.g., waves, currents, bathymetry, and topography).

You will work closely with the Facility Manager and the AODN staff to develop approaches and workflows for the processing, quality control, visualisation and distribution of wave buoy data. You will contribute to applied research using Facility data and you will collaborate with Facility technical staff to develop testing and calibration protocols for facility infrastructure. You will also have to opportunity to participate in various aspects of the field data collection.

To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate how you meet the following selection criteria:
