Job Description:
The Research Ethics & Compliance Support (RECS) team coordinates committees and processes for research involving humans, animals, gene technology, radiation safety and research export controls and provides advice on legislative and other requirements in these areas. Committees include the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and the Human Research Ethics Advisory Panels (HREAPs), the Animal Care & Ethics Committees (ACECs), the Gene Technology Research Committee (GTRC), and the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC). RECS also coordinates other research compliance areas such as Schedule 8 and 9 substances, drone use and biosecurity and leads the development of the university's policy environment for research ethics and compliance.
The Research Assistant will contribute to the Unit's strategic goals by working across multiple high-performance teams providing high-level administrative, compliance and governance support within RECS.
The role of Research Assistant reports to the Human Research Manager and has no direct reports.
• Provide practical support to researchers and committee members in finding information regarding relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines that govern research involving humans while providing high-level advice on relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines.
• Maintain project and governance files in line with RECS operating procedures and UNSW recordkeeping practices ensuring that all relevant regulatory and legislative requirements are met.
• Coordinate the development of high-level information and guidance materials in liaison with other RECS team members.
• Support the financial management of RECS by coordinating billing activities while actively contributing to the strategic alignment of billing across the Unit.

• Cooperate with all the university's health and safety policies and procedures and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact the health and safety of yourself or others.
Skills and Experience
• Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
• Experience in research preferably involving humans, including a broad understanding of ethical and compliance considerations in the conduct of the research. Including knowledge of the Codes, regulations and legislation related to human research ethics.
• Demonstrated proficiency in providing committee support and performing financial and administrative duties within a University or a similar organisation, including experience in working with various operating systems.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills, proven ability to develop strong relationships and work as part of a team while working independently without supervision.
• Excellent organisational, administration and time management skills and the ability to coordinate multiple tasks, establish priorities and meet deadlines while maintaining excellent attention to detail.
• Demonstrated experience with stakeholders within a research environment to provide accurate and timely administrative support advice.
• Demonstrated technical experience using word-processing, spreadsheet, web, database and related computer skills, as well as online video conferencing programs like Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
