The Macquarie University Faculty of Arts is looking for a dynamic and visionary leader for the strategic senior position of Faculty Executive Director.

THE ROLE

As Faculty Executive Director, you will work in collaboration with the Executive Dean and other executive group colleagues, to accelerate the Faculty of Arts growth and success.

Working as a key member of the Faculty Executive Team, you will lead the professional staff operations of an innovative Faculty that is currently going through transformation, and you will collaborate on a diverse array of strategic initiatives across academic and non-academic portfolios. You will provide expert advice to the Executive Dean and other key stakeholders on the financial operation of the Faculty, resource planning and management, risk management, infrastructure and facilities, policy development and higher education market trends. You will also be expected to lead the connection to the Vice President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor portfolios of the University, in particular across student recruitment, marketing, finance, HR, student, research and operations.

Reporting directly to the Executive Dean, we offer you the opportunity to bring your outstanding commercial and leadership skills to enable the Faculty and its staff to realise their full potential and deliver excellence across the full portfolio of professional and academic activity. Demonstrating an ability to participate in Faculty and whole-of-University decision making, dynamic candidates will possess transferable experience from executing complex strategic and operational outcomes, plus the professional capability to deliver the sophisticated demands of the role. Demonstrable experience in leading and embedding successful transformation outcomes, ability to strategically influence, think creatively and exercise sound and effective judgement in a dynamic environment are essential capabilities for this role.

The Faculty

The Faculty of Arts’ mission is to serve our students and the wider community by providing world-class education through an innovative, stimulating and collaborative learning environment across the arts, education, humanities, law and social sciences.  Our educational enterprise is focused on offering competitive high-quality programs of study to prepare our graduates for emergent employment markets.

The domestic and international higher education sector requires innovative and strategic responses to external challenges, particularly regarding student recruitment. A well-positioned Faculty architecture that can respond with agility is key. The Faculty is currently comprised of three schools and five departments.

From 2025, we are proposing a more streamlined and efficiently organised Faculty structure. Experience in leading and embedding change will be deeply desirable as the Faculty continues through this period of strategic transformation, guided by a new strategic plan to be finalised in 2025. The proposed new structure comprises five schools.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will bring proven experience and deep understanding of key strategic issues and opportunities in the global higher education sector or similar complex context.  Utilising their outstanding commercial and leadership skills they will enable the Faculty and its staff to realise their full potential and deliver excellence across the full portfolio of professional and academic activity.

Superior interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders, with a successful track record of consultation, staff engagement and leading transformational initiatives will be essential.

To be considered for the role candidates will have qualifications and/or extensive successful experience in relevant areas such as recruitment, marketing and sales, financial management, business development, HR and/or operational management. Ideally, they have experience within the higher education sector, otherwise within the public sector, a research institute or similar complex environments.
