About the Role

The Head of Construction Assurance is responsible for advising on large scale, multi-million-dollar, complex property projects. In addition, they will head up construction assurance and related functions across Estate Management's capital works program. The role reports to the Director - Design, Delivery & Development and has no direct reports. The successful applicant will possess and have experience in:

  • Provide strategic advice on large scale projects in conjunction with the Directors of Asset Management and Design, Delivery and Development to the University Executives, including submissions through to Vice-Chancellor, Finance and Strategy Committee, Risk Management Committee and UNSW Council as required.
  • Support Design, Delivery and Development in the development of multiple major projects, within budget, to program, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Across Estate Management, oversee quality assurance for the value management process to ensure projects are delivered in line with agreed standards and short-term cost savings are not made that may adversely affect the sustainable revenue or operation of the estate in the future.
  • Ensure robust risk management practices are in place in the portfolio to guarantee the highest level of integrity.
  • Ensure a safety culture is integrated into everything we do.
  • Work in a collaborative and professional manner to enable Estate Management to support the University to deliver its strategic plan.
  • Provide advice on preparation of feasibility studies, complex financial models, and funding requests for projects, and the ongoing monitoring and corrective actions to optimize UNSW’s development position.
  • Advise on the capital program and project planning including initiation documentation, development management and delivery strategies to facilitate successful project implementation.
  • As required, review financial positions of major projects including forecasting, budgeting, commercial considerations and project reporting.

About You

  • Degree in a relevant property related discipline or subject with demonstrated experience in capital programs and projects on a significant scale.
  • Proven experience in the development of major projects both in planning and delivery, to achieve the client’s cost, value, time and quality objectives which includes a variety of building forms and usage types, office and high density residential.
  • Demonstrated experience in the procurement of large-scale construction contracts including an awareness of alternative contract forms and demonstrated negotiation skills.
  • Proven experience in planning and organising complex strategic development and capital investment plans to ensure a coherent and integrated approach to delivery of projects over time.
  • Experience of successfully leading a multi-disciplinary team of property professionals, including external consultants and delivery partners across a comparable diverse and complex estate.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • High level negotiation and problem-solving skills and capacity to exercise initiative, flexibility and proactivity.
  • Excellent management skills and the ability positively influence project teams, including the ability to manage difficult and sensitive issues.
