Job Description:

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is inviting expressions of interest for membership in its Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). The primary responsibility of this role is to assist in the ethical review of human research proposals submitted by UNSW staff, researchers, and students, ensuring compliance with ethical standards.

The UNSW HRECs are seeking individuals to join as members in one of the following member categories:

  • Professional Care: People who have specialised knowledge and experience in the care, protection, and safety of people. For example, a nurse, counsellor, physiotherapist, doctor, psychologist, social worker, paramedic, pharmacist, or police officer.
  • Pastoral Care: A person who performs a pastoral care role in a community, including but not limited to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander elder or community leader, a chaplain, or a minister of religion or religious leader.
  • Layperson: A person who has no affiliation, paid or unpaid, with UNSW and who can offer a broader perspective that reflects the interests and concerns of the public or specific consumer groups.

Candidates must be able to complete the following member duties:

  • Preparation for monthly meetings, involving the review of approximately 1-3 applications per month (approximately 2-3 hours per month).
  • Attendance at the monthly meetings, each lasting approximately 3 hours, or providing comments in lieu of attendance where required.
  • Facilitating the review of research classified at the greater than low-risk levels, ensuring adherence to national and UNSW guidelines.
  • Attendance at any required HREC member training.

Member training is provided to all successful applicants.
