Salary: $75,289 – $102,163 (Level A) or $107,547 – $127,707 (Level B)

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a vibrant and rapidly growing department within FEIT.

The crux of this work being the application of interdisciplinary expertise and thought in order to make new discoveries and innovative solutions towards improved healthcare and social wellbeing.

About the Role

This position will focus on the design and fabrication of manufacturing-ready microfluidic systems. The Research Fellow will be responsible for building and testing fluidics components to develop a portable, point of care sensor for environmental pathogens and contaminants. This includes work related to computer aided design, microfabrication, 3D prototyping, and moulding-based manufacturing procedures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Undertake internationally competitive research, resulting in publications in high impact journals
  • Contribute to teaching, scientific mentoring, and supervision of students
  • Actively participate in School meetings and with guidance, contribute to planning activities or committee work to support capacity building in the School/discipline


About You

You will have strong research skills, and a passionate desire to build a solid academic research career. Your excellent communication skills will see you liaise with internal and external stakeholders including industry bodies and enable you to develop strong relationships. You possess high-level organisation skills allowing you to complete multiple tasks to a high level of quality while also meeting varying deadlines. Ideally you would have experience in attracting external funding through grant applications, and experience in the supervision of students undertaking undergraduate or higher degree by research projects.

Furthermore, you will possess the following:

  • Completion (or near completion) of a PhD in an Engineering field or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in microfluidics and 3D prototyping
  • A demonstrated aptitude for research, with a sound publication record in relevant areas, commensurate with experience and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare research reports and manuscripts for publication.
  • Strong evidence of ability and desire to build an academic research career trajectory.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships
