Job Description:

We are seeking talented, enthusiastic Research Assistants to support the work of the Centre.


  • Salary Package: Research Assistant (HEW Level 5) base salary $75,400 - $85,728 plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading. Pro-rata rates apply for part-time appointments.
  • Appointment type: Full-time or part-time fixed-term positions (12-18 months duration)
  • Macquarie University (North Ryde) location (The Australian Institute of Health Innovation is wheelchair accessible)

The role will involve a range of research support activities including, support in preparation of ethics applications, grant applications, presentations, internal and external meetings and workshops; performance of narrative and systematic literature reviews; data collection activities (including in aged care settings, hospitals and other health care organisations); formatting of manuscripts for submission; preparation of research summaries for the media. We are seeking to fill multiple roles to support funded research projects in topics such as improving medication safety, and the delivery of aged care services. One role is to support the Director of the Centre across a range of projects.

The successful candidates will have an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and an interest in, and/or knowledge of health services, medication safety, hospital care, aged care, and/or digital health.

The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences is ambitiously pushing the boundaries of progressive thinking and challenging what’s possible to solve some of the big issues of our time, both nationally and on a global scale. The Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research, one of the core research centres within AIHI has a multi-stream program of research which focuses on investigating the outcomes and safety of health services. The Centre has particular expertise in assessing the impact of information technologies and investigating the role of electronic health records and decision support in supporting improved health care delivery and health outcomes in hospitals, primary care and aged and community care. The Centre’s research team is multi-disciplinary and applies a broad range of research techniques, from RCT designs to direct observational studies of clinical work.

Essential criteria:

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., psychology, public health, clinical science, pharmacy)
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in conducting literature reviews, including the design of appropriate search strategies for interrogating online databases such as PubMed
  • Demonstrable skills in MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written, inter-personal and team communication skills
  • Knowledge of the Australian Health Care System
  • Ability to understand and comply with the statutory privacy and ethical requirements for research and experience in preparing human research ethics applications

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience in systematic reviews and meta-analyses
  • Post graduate qualifications, particularly those with a research focus (e.g., Honours, MRes, MPH) in the area of health
  • Experience in the aged care sector
