Associate Professor / Professor of Safe and Effective Medication Research

We are looking for an inspiring and strategic individual to lead a new initiative between The University of Queensland (UQ) [through its School of Pharmacy and Faculty of Medicine and Metro North Hospital and Health Services (MNHHS). Our two organisations have a shared commitment to improve the safe use of medicines and minimise adverse patient outcomes arising from inappropriate medication use. We aim to build a successful collaboration that will enable educators, researchers and clinicians within our organisations to become Australia’s leaders in this area and thereby improve health outcomes for patients, their families and carers. A key objective of this collaboration is to lay the groundwork to establish a joint Centre for Safe and Effective Medication Research.

The appointee to this position will have as their principal task the requirement to work with a range of key stakeholders within and beyond UQ and MNHHS to plan and establish a Centre of national significance aligned with the identified National Health Priority for quality and safe use of medicines. Progress will be assessed against agreed KPIs including leveraging funding via national and international research funding schemes to secure and sustain the future Centre’s activities and its impact on health outcomes. The role will interact with all clinical professions within MNHHS involved in medication use and across all of UQ’s disciplines that teach and research in aspects of medicines use and safety.

This position will be primarily based at the Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence (which houses the UQ School of Pharmacy) and the Herston Health Precinct (which houses the MNHHS Clinical Governance Safety, Quality and Risk (CGSQR) Team, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH), and the UQ Faculty of Medicine). Travel will be required between UQ and MNHHS campus sites.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful for this appointment, you will hold an advanced professional qualification or Higher Degree by Research in a discipline area relevant to safe medication management. This will be partnered with a sustained, outstanding record and impact in clinical teaching and/or clinical research in the area of safe and effective use of medicines.

You will bring a demonstrated capability to successful lead the development of a major collaborative partnership, with strategic capability in planning and delivering new initiatives. Your extensive experience in either a general or specialist capacity will see you bring a high level of industry knowledge, along with experience disseminating and adopting innovative clinical techniques.

Finally, your background will also include be a distinguished record of leadership roles. This experience should be across high quality clinical teaching, principally supervising students in advanced or speciality training programs to completion, and fostering external links with the profession.

What We Can Offer

A full-time, fixed-term appointment for three years is available for the successful applicant. We are willing to consider a reduced fraction for experienced applicants who wish to maintain part-time clinical activity directly relevant to this role. The employing entity of this position (UQ or MNHHS) is subject to negotiation with the preferred candidate.

The appointment will be at one of either Academic Level D or E dependent upon the successful candidates’ skills and experience.

A competitive salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
