The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS) Unit was established at The University of Queensland in 1984, recognising the importance of support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and engagement with the Indigenous community. The activities of the ATSIS Unit are guided by the objectives of The University of Queensland Strategic Plan. The ATSIS Unit strongly supports the celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and recognises the enormous contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and perspectives bring to UQ’s teaching and learning, research and engagement activities.

About This Opportunity

As the Director, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS) Unit you will develop and operationalise the ATSIS unit’s strategic direction in line with the University’s Indigenous Engagement Strategies. You will provide operational leadership to the unit, in particular across the key focus areas of outreach, community engagement, student support and teaching and research.

You will undertake governance and leadership responsibilities, participating on boards and committees and working closely with stakeholders both internal and external to UQ. You will manage the operational functions of the unit, developing strategies to manage resources, overseeing implementation of the Marketing and Communications plan and undertaking regular reviews of the Unit’s administrative functions and progress against key performance indicators.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus. The ATSIS Unit has premises at both the St Lucia and Gatton campuses. Remote assistance is provided to students at Gatton and other UQ campuses or locations.

As the ideal candidate, you’ll have a post-graduate degree with proven leadership in a Tertiary, Government or Community organisation or similar, or an equivalent combination of experience and expertise. You will have a demonstrated understanding of Indigenous societies and cultures, and extensive experience engaging and collaborating with Indigenous communities, individuals and organisations.
