The Faculty of Science teaches approximately 7000 full-time student equivalents, with an academic staff of approximately 600 and general staff of 300. The Faculty operational budget is of the order of $100m annually, excluding business activities and research funds (which total around $80m annually).
The UNSW Data Science Hub is being established as a major strategic initiative of the Faculty of Science to cultivate and promote foundational and applied research in Data Science with an applied focus in Environmental Data Science, Physical Data Science and Health Data Science. It is envisaged that the Hub will provide a world-class environment, with access to state of the art data visualization and computing facilities, for creating, developing, and deploying transformative data-driven decision-making tools to address future societal challenges. The Hub will involve the participation of multiple Schools within the Faculty and across UNSW.
With a focus on facilitating and driving accelerated business growth, the Business Development & Operations Manager will provide strategic expert advice and input into the development of strategy, policy and planning as well as actively drive business development initiatives to position the Hub for success throughout all stages of its lifespan.

The role of Business Development & Operations Manager reports to Director, Data Science Hub, and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
Business Development:
- Drive and maintain strong relationships and networks across the Data Science sectors, both internally and externally, to facilitate the achievements of interdisciplinary collaborations and knowledge exchange.
- Identify, develop and secure new opportunities for research and educational partnerships nationally and internationally.
- Liaise and work with the Division of External Relations to devise campaigns, manage advocacy activities, create and manage the Hub’s on-line presence and advise on media and communication responses.
- Promote the Data Science Hub capability, technologies and channels to external partners to drive revenue and impact.
- Proactively identify and pursue opportunities for the development and funding of UNSW education, research and knowledge exchange.
- Successfully negotiate substantial contracts and complex Data Science business development initiatives on behalf of the Faculty.
- Plan and successfully execute the delivery of workshops, major events and communications with a range of stakeholders.
- Manage key projects undertaken by the Hub including development of cross-faculty research grant applications, education proposals and knowledge exchange initiatives in accordance with agreed priorities.
- Provide coaching and guidance to build capability within the faculties to increase the number of academics engaged with data science.
Operations:
- In conjunction with the Director, monitor and update strategic, business and operational plans for the Hub to enable the achievement of agreed goals and milestones.
- Develop and implement administrative, financial, human resource and IT strategies and plans to ensure the allocation of resources is fully aligned with strategy and supports the long-term sustainability of the Hub.
- Drive the development and delivery of business improvement initiatives and programs that support stakeholder requirements while ensuring alignment with a university wide perspective.
- Establish and implement a performance monitoring system to support effective decision making and act quickly when performance falls outside agreed parameters.
- Ensure all required financial and management reports are submitted to the Director in a timely manner.
General:
- Provide high level strategic advice to the Director on ARC, University and Partner Organisation funding rules and policies.
- Regularly report to the Director and provide early advice of any emerging or forecasted issues likely to impact the Hub’s operations and / or achievement of key milestones and agreed benefits.
- Monitor and manage oversight of various UNSW and Faculty policies and processes, ensuring the Centre’s activities are both compliant and effective.
- Implement the UNSW Health and safety management system within your area of responsibility.
About the successful applicant
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Substantial relevant business development and management experience in a similar role within a multi-disciplinary, research organisation.
- A PhD in relevant disciple or a Master’s in Data Science is preferred.
- Outstanding track record of achievement in developing and closing business deals including research and/or educational partnerships.
- Experience in financial management and demonstrated skills in research budget development for funding applications.
- Excellent communication, consultation, negotiation and influencing skills with proven ability to engage effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Proactive and motivated with strong stakeholder and relationship management skills.
- Demonstrated ability in developing and implementing systems and processes within a large organisation.
- Extensive staff management experience, successfully leading, coaching and developing teams.
- Strong initiative with superior analytical and innovative problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse complex environments and develop business recommendations based on strategic priorities.
- Strong organisational skills with demonstrated experience in strategic and resource planning, goal setting and project management.
- Ability and capacity to direct and monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the safety management system.
