Fixed term position for three (3) years

An opportunity to undertake research on minerals systems with The University of Adelaide and the Geological Survey of South Australia within the National Drilling Initiative in the MinEx Cooperative Research Centre (MinEx CRC), and play a pivotal role in The University of Adelaide and Geological Survey of South Australia’s mineral exploration research program

The School of Physical Sciences at the University of Adelaide is inviting applications from suitably qualified early career researchers to join our program as a MinEx CRC Researcher in Mineral Systems Geoscience. The MinEx CRC (Mineral Exploration Cooperative Research Centre, https://minexcrc.com.au/) includes the ambitious National Drilling Initiative (NDI; https://minexcrc.com.au/program-three-national-drilling-initiative/). This program is built around three themes of data accessibility and decision-making tools for drilling, understanding geological architecture and evolution, and mineral systems research. These broad themes are planned to be integrated to form powerful methodologies for reducing the risk of mineral exploration programs by combining fundamental geoscientific information and high-end data analytics. The successful candidate will pursue research that addresses the challenges facing the Minerals Industry in Australia, and South Australia specifically.

We are seeking a person who will offer new perspectives on mineral exploration in Australia and be able to undertake their own research in this area, and also collaborate effectively on projects with other MinEx CRC researchers. The role will require working with the researchers at The University of Adelaide, and our co-host to this position, the Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA).

The role requires a person who has the ability to frame their research in a non-traditional manner by applying existing and new data into understanding the mineral potential of the MinEx CRC NDI regions of the largely undercover Delamerian Orogen and Curnamona Province of eastern South Australia. The candidate will be co-located in the GSSA and the Department of Earth Sciences at The University of Adelaide, and contribute to the joint research effort between both institutions. This will include project development and co-supervision of Honours and postgraduate students.

To be successful you will need:

  • PhD or equivalent in an area of earth sciences is required.
  • Demonstrated research capability in the broad area of mineral system geology, with demonstrated application of at least one of the following: tectonics, geochemistry, geophysics; geochronology, thermochronology, petrology, ore geology.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and critically analyse data, in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team.
  • Experience with GIS software.
  • Experience in manipulating data using machine learning or other data analytical techniques would be advantageous.
