Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT) 


Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, or RMIT as it is now more commonly known, is a public university based in Melbourne, Victoria. Founded in 1887 by Francis Ormond, it started as The Working Men's College and offered night school for science, arts, and technology. In 1960, it changed its name to its current title after being the first 
college to be awarded the royal patronage by Queen Elizabeth II.

Since then, RMIT has progressed into a globally renowned university of technology and design. Almost 130 years after its foundation, RMIT now has branch campuses in other parts of Melbourne such as Bundoora and Brunswick, as well as in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam. In 2013, a research centre was also developed in Barcelona, Spain.

Vocational and Higher Education at RMIT University

RMIT offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in its higher education division and vocational certificates under the Technical and Further Education or TAFE Division. The three major academic colleges, namely, College of Business, College of Design and Social Context, and College of Science, Engineering and Health, offer 20 different schools, including a Graduate School of Business and Law. Its TAFE Division offers diplomas and certificate levels 1-4 in the areas of business, engineering, health, environment, education, design, and IT. 

RMIT is known as a university of technology that provides high quality education and academic excellence. Considered one of the top 15 schools in Australia, the university was also ranked 20th in the world for its arts and design schools. It’s also included in the top 100 universities worldwide in Architecture, Accounting, Engineering, and Computer Science.
